Expert Care for any Spinal Cord Tumor
Primary spinal cord tumors are tumors that originate in the spine, but may vary by location. These are uncommon and usually benign. Examples of primary spinal cord tumors include:
- Epidermoid tumors
Most cancerous spinal cord tumors are metastatic because they result from the spread of a primary cancer from another part of the body such as the lung, breast, prostate or kidney. The symptoms seen with these particular tumors are usually associated with compression of the spinal cord which may cause:
- Local pain or radicular pain in the arms or legs
- Motor disturbances
- Sensory abnormalities
- Urogenital dysfunction
Surgical treatment is often indicated in patients who have compression symptoms or an unstable spine. Surgery may also be necessary to establish a tissue diagnosis.
