Piriformis Syndrome Expertise at Neurosurgery & Spine Associates
For issues and conditions of the spinal area, including muscles and nerves, the specialists at Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, formerly the Brain & Spine Institute, are able to help our patients improve their quality of life. Our team is able to care for a range of nerve issues, including Piriformis Syndrome.
Understanding Piriformis Syndrome
The piriformis muscle is a small muscle that directly overlaps the sciatic nerve as it exits the pelvis into the leg. When the piriformis gets inflamed or swollen, it can irritate the sciatic nerve and cause leg pain.
The diagnosis of Piriformis Syndrome is often made by a special nerve study that demonstrates a compression of the sciatic nerve when the leg is placed in a position that tenses the muscle. More recently, MRI neurography can also be used to directly visualize the nerves.
Treatment Options to Reduce Pain
With careful diagnosis and review of individual issues and concerns, a personalized treatment plan is determined that can include:
- Cortisone or Botox injections
- Muscle relaxants
- Physical therapy
- Sacroiliac stabilization (by surgery)
