What are the common causes of sore throat?
There are many reasons you may have a sore throat. Some of the most common causes are:
- Cold or flu viruses
- Air pollution and other irritants (like tobacco smoke)
- Acid reflux
What are the common causes of swallowing difficulty?
In most cases, swallowing problems aren’t serious and swallowing difficulty has many causes. Some common causes are:
- Improper chewing
- Taking bites that are too big
In some cases, swallowing problems may indicate something more serious, like:
- Thyroid disease
- Tumor in the mouth or throat
- High blood pressure
- Vocal cord problems
How do you address sore throat, swallowing difficulty and the conditions that cause it?
When a patient is experience a sore throat and swallowing difficulty, a flexible scope exam of the throat is always the first step. Following that, additional testing such as barium swallow or a CT scan may be required.
