Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
What is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery?
FESS is one of the most advanced forms of sinus surgery and may be recommended. An endoscope is used because it is thought that the best way to obtain normal healthy sinuses is to open the natural pathways to the sinuses. Once an improved drainage system is achieved, the diseased sinus mucosa, or mucous membrane, has an opportunity to return to normal. The use of laser and advanced image guided technology improves outcome. With state-of-the-art micro-telescopes and instruments, abnormal and obstructive tissues are removed.
Is FESS an Invasive Procedure?
The surgical procedure is performed entirely through the nostrils, leaving no external scars. There is little swelling and only mild discomfort. The nasal airway is open for breathing. Return to work can be expected in a few days. A new technique, balloon sinuplasty, can be an additional tool for the maxillary and frontal sinuses. Preoperative in-office nasal endoscopy and CT scan of the sinus are required as part of the evaluation.
